MUSIC

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

From the Platform 21 overview of "RESEARCH AND OBSESSION: What Kind of Person Spends 20 Years on One Subject?," comes the following description of Amsterdam-based image maker André Thijssen:

"Photographer Andre Thijssen's artistic 'obsessiveness' takes the form of constantly looking around him: he trawls the city in search of interesting images to capture, always in possession of a camera. He collects pictures voraciously: "I don't seek, I find," he said. A second phase, one of selection, follows."

Having first published images with LAS back in 1998, when the site was still fledgling without a dedicated URL, Thijssen has stayed in touch and kept us up to date on his various projects, which range from fine-art experimentation to commercial advertising projects and a litany of postcard images. For his second installment, the Dutch photographer delivered a remarkable series of images taken in cemeteries across Portugal, the "Fading Graveyard" portrait series. This time around Thijssen offers up a series of automotive images that, while conveying the everyday normalcy of transport, also highlight the diverse personalities that drivers develop for their vehicles and the distorted reflections that automotive glass provide of their surrounding environment.
