» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Each spring, with the passing of final exams and the end of another academic year at the state's largest university, the Great Plains town of Lawrence, Kansas, grows quiet as tens of thousands of students make their summer exodus. For the past four years the respite has been short lived, however, as the town has played host to the Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival the first weekend in June. The festival, which takes its name from the nearby Wakarusa River (from a Native American term meaning "ass-deep"), has quickly become one of the festival circuit's premiere early summer events. With a focus not only on sustainability and low-impact event planning (there is a heavy focus on recycling, and the festival uses biodiesel fuels to limit its carbon footprint) but also ergonomics (a call for feedback and suggestions after the 2006 event led to drastically changed security policies and even the relaxing of their no-glass policy), the festival has expanded by leaps and bounds each year, with the bulk of festivalgoers returning each subsequent year. In his third year covering Wakarusa, LAS staffer-at-large Claude Breithaupt headed to Kansas earlier this month and snapped a few images of the goings on.
