LA CINEMA FILM + REVIEW
CINEMA
» Machine Girl - Fans of The Evil Dead trilogy, the films of John Woo and Japanese anime will all find something to like in the immensely gory Tokyo Shock production of a story about a girl, her gun arm, and her gruesome killing spree.[06.30.2008 by Jon Burke]
CINEMA
» Encounters at the End of the World - Another idiosyncratic and exceptional statement from one of contemporary cinema's greatest directors, Werner Herzog's new feature film, centered on Antarctica, fuels his approach to life as a "chain of catastrophes." The film had its premiere at New York's Film Forum earlier this month and will begin a theatrical run on Friday.[06.26.2008 by Jonah Flicker]
CINEMA
» Children of Men - FROM THE ARCHIVES: Being released to DVD next week, Alfonso Cuaron's visionary 2006 film imagines humanity in the year 2027, in a world where the artistic voice has been completely lost among the wreckage of constant war and strife, and it is a world that looks frighteningly familiar.[06.24.2008 by Imran Siddiquee]
CINEMA
» Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea - Directed by Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer, narrated by John Waters, and soundtracked by Friends of Dean Martinez, this unique documentary recounts the catastrophic past, details the forlorn present, and looks to the uncertain future of one of America's truly weird places.[06.19.2008 by Jonah Flicker]
CINEMA
» The Signal - Released to DVD last week after a low-key and limited theaters run in February, this remarkable low-budget film - written and directed by David Bruckner, Dan Bush and Jacob Gentry (yes, all three) - is a cut above similar films in the resurgent "mass hysteria" horror trend, including M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening.[06.17.2008 by Jon Burke]
CINEMA
» The Red Violin - Along with Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva, director Francois Girard's film, about the history of a cursed violin, is one of the first editions from Lionsgate Films' Meridian Collection of reissues. The period-jumping piece, which features a remarkably subdued Samuel L. Jackson, overcomes many of its faults thanks to John Corigliano's Oscar-winning score.[06.16.2008 by Jonah Flicker]

» Subliminal Projects, the masthead name of a multifunctional art space created by Shepard Fairey and Blaze Blouin more than a decade ago, is presenting a traveling art exhibition called Big Kids / Little Kids, to be curated by John Freeborn, the Philadelphia-based author of the book of the same name. The art show takes inspiration from the book to form a Los Angeles exhibition of new materials in illustration, painting, photography, printmaking and mixed media works by a range of notable artists, from Fairey to Jesse Goldstein, Amy S. Kauffman, Erin McDade, Todd St. John, Adam Wallacavage, and Andrew Jeffrey Wright. Previous works from a host of other artists will also be on display at the show, which runs from July 19 to August 8, with an opening reception held for the artists on Saturday, July 19 from 8-11pm. [07.03.2008 11:00 am]
» Amanda Palmer, formerly of The Dresden Dolls and now performing under her own name, has paired with video collaborator Michael Pope to shoot six music videos for Palmer's album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer, scheduled for release on September 16th. The plan is for the videos to "collapse together into a short feature film with mysterious segues and recurring clues and objects," and be as much art as marketing. The videos will be posted on a bi-weekly basis beginning this week, and the first is "Astronaut". [07.03.2008 08:00 am]

BOUND + PRINT REVIEW
33 1/3: Reign In Blood - In his detailed analysis of Slayer's seminal 1986 album for Continuum Books' revered 33 1/3 series, D.X. Ferris doesn't open a whole new world of perspective on the album, but he does dig up a few anecdotal tidbits worthy of conversation, and gets Tori Amos to fantasize about menstruation over Afghanistan. [06.23.2008 by Dan Weiss]
Burning Angel - Mike Shea examines the new photobook from the alt-porn website of the same name and finds that, with more than 700 images, it "offers nothing that couldn't be accomplished with a mid-range camera phone and five minutes of Photoshop tutorials, and represents an insulting lack of craft even for so-called pornography." [06.20.2008 by Mike Shea]
I Was Told There'd Be Cake - In her book of sardonic twentysomething essays on single life in New York City, Sloane Crosley narrowly extinguishes the flame of "it"-girl backlash with a collection of sometimes poignant, sometimes mundane, sometimes hilarious, but generally entertaining anecdotes. [06.18.2008 by Eric J Herboth]
Plastic Words - Uwe Poerksen's monumental study explores the power of words, particularly in the political arena, in modern society. Do we truly embrace the abstract language of politicians or is there an inherent danger in such bland platitudes? Brian Christopher Jones discusses the world of language in his review of Poerksen's book, subtitled The Tyranny of a Modular Language. [06.10.2008 by Brian Christopher Jones]
Starbucked - In his new book, subtitled A Double Tall Tale of Caffeine, Commerce, and Culture, author Taylor Clark explores the rise of one the the most ubiquitous - and criticized - corporations in the world. Is Starbucks and their quest to rule the world as evil as critics believe? Coffee-lover Jason Middlekauff finds out. [05.22.2008 by Jason Middlekauff]
The American Plague - Molly Cardwell Crosby's book examines the outbreak of yellow fever in Memphis, Tennessee during the summer of 1878, and the medical community's often roundabout way of decoding the mysterious disease. Crosby's detailing of the deadly outbreak is remarkable, and the story is eerily echoed by the slow reaction of governments to similar events in our modern world. [05.14.2008 by Jason Middlekauff]
