» Appeals and Allergies and Remixes.
The Five Kinds of Appeal to Authority You Meet on the Internet: "We know that humans--especially popes--are fallible. If only there were some credible source to which you might ascribe your toxic viewpoint… what? No, sorry, God is taken. But here are a few other ways to make the fallacy take wing." NOT RELATED: "As allergies surge, an ancient cure? More Americans (20 to 30 percent) claim some form of allergy--and a Chinese herbal treatment may offer hope." STILL NOT RELATED: The band TUNNG, of whom LAS writer Kevin Alfoldy wrote "one of outfit's main draws is that even with a sound heavily indebted to samples and drum loops, the songs still manage to transcend the sterility of technology and convey an emotional depth," is releasing a remix album of ...And Then We Saw Land in the US on April 6th. To promote, they're taking open submissions on a remix contest for the single "Hustle" from the album. One selected track will be propped as the B-side to a forthcoming single by the band, and the composer will snatch exclusive music and merchandise along with a SoundCloud Pro Plus account (worth ?500). To give some inspiration, Thrill Jockey has posted a Bloc Party remix of "Hustle" mp3 to get a taste, and there is the original video for "Hustle" as well. [03.08.2010 11:00 am]
» LA loves Hall & Oates.
This is kind of ironic style we think, like the whole bacon meme. The Bird and The Bee will performing the album Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates live Friday at the El Rey in Los Angeles. The album is out via Blue Note on the 23rd but the entire show will be streamed live tonight starting at 8pm PST. [03.05.2010 11:00 am]
» New York is crazy about film festivals.
"In an unprecedented opportunity to experience a major European film festival in New York, International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) comes to BAM to present the entire slate from their Tiger Awards, a prize given to first- and second-time filmmakers. Past winners of the Tiger Award include Hong Sang-soo (Woman on the Beach), Kelly Reichart (Old Joy), and Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight). The series features 13 North American and US premieres, including Ben Russell's brilliantly rigorous debut feature Let Each One Go Where They May, Veiko Õunpuu's parable on the rise of Capitalism in Eastern Europe, The Temptation of St. Tony, and Alamar, a fictional documentary about a father and son spending a summer on the Chinchorro reef on the Mexican coast." SEE ALSO: Light Industry's new venue for film and electronic art is holding several 16mm screenings this month, inlcudling Jon Moritsugu's Der Elvis & My Degeneration (Tuesday, March 9), Helke Sander's The All-Around Reduced Personality (Tuesday, March 16), and Harun Farocki's Images of the World and the Inscription of War (Tuesday, March 23). Farocki's name will be familiar to those who read the LAS feature on the exhibition "For the Use of Those Who See," presented by the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin last year. AND: Tribeca Film is "a comprehensive distribution and marketing platform for independent film, and Tribeca Film Festival Virtual (TFFV), a new online venture offering worldwide audiences an opportunity to experience the Tribeca Film Festival (TFF). These two new initiatives stem from Tribeca's desire to redefine traditional models of film distribution and release patterns and with TFF, create new opportunities for filmmakers." FIELD NOTES
» Night Owl & Early Bird - We have been hearing a lot about art in Austin, Texas, recently. We're actually going to feature another exhibition at this very gallery on Monday, but first we just wanted to share the cute image for their second annual fundraiser.[03.10.2010 by The LAS Staff]
CINEMA
» The Ghost Writer - Pierce Brosnan does his best Tony Blair grin in Roman Polanski's first post-extradition film, "a thriller with topical ambitions: it takes place in a jittery, bomb-fearing Britain and America, where the weary rituals of security screenings refuse to let the characters or the audience relax."[03.09.2010 by Theon Weber]
FIELD NOTES
» Not Knots 2010 - Think the knitting trend from the mid-00s has gone? Think again. This weekend the creatives at Cabinet magazine are turning their art space over to a new workshop on "knots, knitting, and string figures." Not only will attendees be given access to string, they'll be plied with twisted baked goods and tasty wine as well.[03.04.2010 by The LAS Staff]
BOUND + PRINT REVIEW
Going Rogue: An American Life - Essentially a rehash of the bullet points her publicity handlers have made time and again, with a few more biographical tidbits they hoped would stretch her airbrushed persona into a smarter and more defiant version of the caricature she already is, Sarah Palin's new memior is even more of a yawn that you might expect. [11.23.2009 by Eric J Herboth]
In Search of the Multiverse - This exciting new book by astrophysicist and popular science writer John Gribbin is a layman's guide to approaching the latest developments in physics and their implications for our understanding of not just physical space but reality itself. [10.30.2009 by Eric J Herboth]
The Given Day - As with most of his work, Dennis Lehane's new novel is set in and around Boston. A literary gift that keeps on giving, The Given Day weaves together historical fact and finely wrought characters into a touching, heart-tugging tale of remarkable power. [11.10.2008 by Cory Tendering]
Havana Nocturne - In his heavily-researched, thoroughly-sourced book, true-crime novelist and television screenwriter T.J. English delivers a nitty-gritty account of how the most raucous and notorious social and criminal circles overlapped for a decade in Cuba, and how it all came tumbling down. [11.04.2008 by Eric J Herboth]
Reading the OED - By setting out to digest the entirety of the Oxford English Dictionary - a book so massive that it took 6243 pounds of ink to print its 350-million characters - and then write a book about it, word junkie Ammon Shea did us all a favor. [10.14.2008 by Eric J Herboth]
33 1/3: 20 Jazz Funk Greats - In the 54th installment of Continuum's 33-1/3 series, Matmos member Drew Daniel examines Throbbing Gristle's seminal 1979 album. Detailed and personal, the book that is a small masterpiece in itself, jam-packed with memories, interviews and dissection of songs. [09.18.2008 by Daniel Svanberg]

» A Million In the Morning - "A documentary about a Movie Watching World Championship wherein Richard Simmons was abused, a guy hallucinated a beagle crawling up a plant, a bunny head was used as a weapon 78 times, and the guys who made it got fired."[01.22.2010 by Eric J Herboth]
CINEMA
» Red Cliff - Flaming arrows, gunpowder and catapulting bombs? Check. Hand-to-hand combat? Check. Ridiculous swordfights, extreme horseback riding, and biological warfare? Check. This massive historical epic from John Woo has great parts, but it all adds up to a lackluster sum.[11.24.2009 by Jonah Flicker]
CINEMA
» Proceed and Be Bold! - The radical, often shocking images and slogans that jump from the surface of Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.'s prints belie the layered, meticulously machined nature of his letterpress printing. Three Chicago-based filmmakers document these contradictions with a relish inspired by its subject, a man who embraces life's beauty and complexities with all his creative energy.[10.06.2009 by Jon Burke]
CINEMA
» Rudo y Cursi - In the latest film from Y Tu Mama Tambien screenwriter Carlos Cuaron, crossover stars Gael Garcia and Diego Luna double up on the yokel-gone-bigtime gag (think Kingpin or Waterboy, set in Mexico) with mixed results.[09.15.2009 by Adrian Perez]
CINEMA
» Inglourious Basterds - Brutal and comedic, revisionist and historically anecdotal, pop-lite and artistically sound, the latest film in Quentin Tarantino's canon is truly a celebration of the creative joy and raw power of cinema.[09.08.2009 by Jon Burke]
