CINEMA» Ponyo - Alone in animator Hayao Miyazaki's oeuvre, the titular character of his new film seems to have one eye on the audience, eager to please; there's a whiff of convention in her. Though, relatively speaking, it's probably churlish to call a giddy little girl with chicken feet who used to be a jellyfish a cliché.

CINEMA» Funny People - This Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen comedy could have nailed it, but instead something--creator Judd Apatow's loyalty to his own memories; his awkward desire to make a movie about Important Shit; maybe just his weakness for his pretty wife and nice-seeming kids--throttles it.

CINEMA» Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince - Directed by David Yates in unassuming, naturalistic mode (it treats special effects like architecture), the sixth and maybe best Harry Potter movie spends most of its time on subplots of almost bizarre banality: Hermione loves Ron; Harry loves Ron's sister; some hyperventilating chick with ringlets (she's a cartoon, but a funny one) also loves-or at least covets-Ron.
