» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

The four players of Bam Bam--Mou (guitar), Luxor (percussions), Meme (drums) and Leo (bass)-create one of Monterrey, Mexico's most interesting and enjoyable proposals. Sharing vocal duties, the quartet's blend of indie-pop and indie-rock, infused with a lo-fi esque texture throughout, give Bam Bam a similar taste to that of the Little Ones, the Shins or the New Pornographers.

The band released their debut EP in 2008 under their own independent label, Nene Records (though other independent bands have signed with them since). Working on a small scale, the band has managed to garner recognition amongst local and international critics alike, creating a small buzz that was parlayed into invitations to the 2008 and 09 editions of the SXSW Music Festival. Soon more followers fell in love with the group's dreamy and playful style, and even though many couldn't understand their witty lyrics, their music served as a perfect translator. Back in Monterrey their local gigs seemed a bit more crowded.

The group's eponymous EP, available for free download on their labelīs website, at less than 30 minutes long, is a bittersweet power pop concentrate which can be easily enjoyed in one sitting. Out of the gates, "Oro Flash," is a strong Breeders-style opener with a female leading voice angrily ringing out over distorted guitars and sluggish drums. The composition may throw off a bit from the quartet's core identity, but in the meantime the track gains the undivided attention of the listener before being quickly followed by "Hi-Q," one of their best and brightest songs. The opening salvos give the EP a proper introduction, and from then on the record is a lot of Pet Sounds mixed with Cuatro Caminos, a perfect balance between quirky pop and solid inde rock. "Por Favor no Vuelvas a Nacer" is clear example of the band's bipolar sweet and sour affair, with a melodic repetitive riff that evolves into a more psychedelic, folksy mood without dropping its innate warmth. The last track, "Astrobilly," which is also the longest (at six minutes), sounds like a cut from another album. A newer one. Composed almost entirely of distorted instrumental parts, the song has more of a mature feeling to it. It may be where the band is headed, which sounds more than OK.
