» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

From Stillwater, Oklahoma come two young musicians, Nick Wheeler and Tyson Ritter, who call themselves the All American Rejects. The two musicians are young (Wheeler, who plays guitar and provides backing vocals is 20, while Ritter, who plays bass and handles the lead vocals, is 18) and promising. While Wheeler and Ritter are the main songwriters, on the road they are joined by a drummer, second guitarist and keyboardist who help translate the studio material to a live setting, which is truly when the music begins to take its fullest form. The keyboard melodies add an element that is a definite plus while the drums and second guitar help make the songwriting duo's sound much thicker, retaining a lot of the power that would be lost if it were just guitar and bass.

Produced by Tim O' Heir (who is known for his recording work with Superdrag, Sebadoh, and Radio 4). The All Americans Rejects showases Wheeler and Ritter as superb song writers who know how to pen a song that will stick in your head from Monday morning to week's end. Tracks such as " Swing, Swing," "My Paper Heart," and "Don't Leave Me" swirl bits reminisce of the Cure, The Who, The Rentals, New Order, The Replacements, The Beach Boys, and Matchbox Twenty into the sound of The All American Rejects.

Lyrically, The All American Rejects is not exactly the most complex album, but the songs about love and heartbreak settle well and do not come across as immature or overly simple. In fact it is the vocal harmonies of the infectious songs that outshine the spotty the lyrical content. Hook after hook, chorus after chorus, the All American Rejects are growing on me and the songs are following with me wherever I go.

A release like The All American Rejects might be just what Doghouse Records needs to get them back into the underground spotlight. The label has been laying low recently and it seems to have been a few years since I heard about anything notable coming out on Doghouse. Right now the The All American Rejects might be the indie scenes best kept secret, but with major-label courtship underway, don't expect that to last for long.
