» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

"We are focused entirely on writing honest music that is straight from the heart," says guitarist Jeff Davis of Canadian rock band Boys Night Out. "We're not out to sell ourselves, or trick anybody. We just do what we do, no bullshit, and we make no apologies for it."

Apparently what lies within is inventive rock music, merging and melding elements from pop, punk, prog, emo and hardcore to carry the dark, reflective lyrics of vocalist Connor Lovat-Fraser. Consider it sum-rock; totaling the collective musical influences around them in an effort to create their own niche. Then again, it seems they don't even care how you perceive them.

Still, whether they remain aware or not, your opinion should be positive toward the band's self-titled release. With two other full-lengths under their belt and multiple EPs, including this year's digital EP Fifty Million People Can't Be Wrong, the quartet has shown the ability to maintain their platform minus the feminine contributions of keyboardist and vocalist Kara Dupuy.

Boys Night Out quickly establishes a heads-above position in the rock world with "Swift and Unforgiving", a frenetic-turned-catchy swirl of time signatures, falsettos and melody where Lovat-Fraser excels as an unknown vocalist in rock music. "The Push And Pull" launches into familiar punk/pop realms, complete with predictable riffs and harmonies, until the band slows the chorus to modern rock status. "Up With Me" pushes the envelope even more with Lovat-Fraser's growl marking a darker venture that develops into one of the album's best tracks. The sing-along "Fall For The Drinker" is a glass-raising, barroom effort where Lovat-Fraser leads the chants, "Tonight to hell with everything else/ Tonight we drink to ourselves."

Some missteps occur along the path. Namely "Reason Ain't Our Long Suit" and "Apartment" toward album's end bog down an otherwise unconventional affair. That said, Boys Night Out and producer Lou Giordano (Sunny Day Real Estate, Paul Westerberg, Taking Back Sunday) still have taken a fragile overarching concept and pulled it off, delivering one of the strongest rock releases of the year.
