Only series’ that fall into the following time line are included: Summer 2003- Spring 2004
+
I judge shows according to their U.S. air dates, meaning The Office does garner some nods.
+
Sorry, but ‘minor technicalities’ (an industry term for lighting, sound editing, even directing etc.) have been excluded. I can only type so much you know.
I’ve also included my take on the lifetime achievement award which I did not name after
myself.

Why the Timmy’s
should be held in
higher esteem than the Emmy’s |
+
I don’t discriminate against Sci-Fi, Teen, or Animated programs.
+
I would have given Jackie Gleason an award for the Honeymooners.
+
I only have four nominations per category as opposed to five because, let’s face it, five kinda sucks.
+
I don’t give sympathy votes.
+
I watch The Prisoner.

Will Arnett as George Bluth II- Arrested Development (FOX)
+
Jeffery Tambor as George Bluth, Sr.- Arrested Development (FOX)
+
David Hyde Pierce as Niles Crane- Frasier (NBC)
+
Martin Freeman as Tim- The Office (BBC America)
Winner: Will Arnett as George Bluth II- Arrested Development (FOX)
Why?: As the stoic tragically diluted older brother to the business savvy Michael, Arnett’s thoughtless portrayal of GOB is decidedly an unlikable character, which is why we love him so much. Too bad it doesn’t translate into big ratings though. Honorable mention to David Cross’ Tobias Funke.
|
+
Portia de Rossi as Lindsay Bluth Funke- Arrested Development (FOX)
+
Jessica Walter as Lucille Bluth- Arrested Development (FOX)
+
Doris Roberts as Marie Barone- Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS)
+
Megan Mullany as Karen- Will & Grace (NBC)
Winner: Jessica Walter as Lucille Bluth- Arrested Development (FOX)
Why?: As the socialite matriarch of the Bluth clan, Walter’s makes being a blue-blooded snob one of the most entertaining things on the planet.

Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndham-Price- Angel (The WB)
+
James Marsters as Spike- Angel (The WB)
+
Steve Buscemi as Tony Blundetto- The Sopranos (HBO)
Winner: Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndham-Price- Angel.
Why?: By a hair over co-star James Marsters. Denisof’s brilliant portrayal of the emotionally devastated Denisof could make you shed a tear. Spending most of the season as virtual walking death, he reached his apex in his final scene in which he finally got some peace, in the form of a dagger to the stomach.
|
+
Amy Acker as Fred/ Illryia- Angel (The WB)
+
Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane- Deadwood (HBO)
+
CCH Pounder as Detective Claudette Wyms- The
Shield (FX)
+
Drea de Mateo as Adriana La Cerva- The Sopranos
(HBO)
Winner: Amy Acker as Fred/ Illyria- Angel (The WB).
Why?: Wow, so Amy Acker can act. Not to knock her or
anything, but playing Fred really didn’t require much
talent on her part. Of course this changed when the
ancient demon goddess Illyria possessed her body thus
killing Fred (long story). From then on she excellently
portrayed the occasionally evil, always confused with
modern life (it’s rubbish you know) demon. Good for
her.

Henry Winkler as Barry Zuckerhorn- Arrested
Development (FOX)
+
Anthony LaPaglia as Simon Moon- Frasier (NBC)
+
John Cleese as Lyle Finster- Will & Grace
(NBC)
Winner: Henry Winkler as Barry Zuckerhorn- Arrested
Development (FOX).
Why?: Winkler’s performance of the Bluth family’s
bumbling lawyer was laugh out loud funny, just like FOX
said it would be. As an added bonus, he was the Fonze.
Note: This category was extremely close, even among the
guest stars who didn’t get a nomination.
|
+
Julie Benz as Darla- Angel (The WB)
+
Juliet Landau as Drusilla- Angel (The WB)
+
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Maggie Lizer- Arrested Development (FOX)
+
Liza Minnelli as Lucille Austero- Arrested Development (FOX)
Winner: Liza Minnelli as Lucille Austero- Arrested Development (FOX).
Why?: She was so good I forgot she was actually Liza Minnelli. Playing the arch rival/ best friend to Lucille Bluth, the two exchanging passive aggressive compliments/ insults were a highlight of the show, Liza was able to shine and make everyone forget that divorce thing. Let’s hope she makes an appearance in season
two.

Dave Chappelle- Chappelle’s Show (Comedy Central)
+
Sascha Baron Cohen- Da Ali G Show (HBO)
+
Jon Stewart- The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central)
+
Conan O’Brien- Late Night with Connan O’ Brien (NBC)
Winner: Connan O’Brien- Late Night with Connan O’ Brien (NBC).
Why?: His wicked wit and Harvard smarts have always served him well, not to mention the hair, and this year was clearly no different. At this point he’s funnier than Letterman and is far more deserving of the 11:35 slot than Jay will ever be. Who says improve comedians can’t host a talk show?
|
+
Billy West as Fry, Zoidberg, Professor Farnsworth and others- Futurama (FOX)
+
H. Jon Benjamin as Jason and Coach McGuirk- Home Movies (Cartoon Network)
+
Brendan Small as Brendan Small- Home Movies (Cartoon Network)
+
Dan Castellaneta as Homer and numerous others- The Simpsons (FOX)
Winner: Brendan Small as Brendan Small- Home Movies (Cartoon Network).
Why?: His voice is strangely soothing and a joy to listen to. Which is what voice acting is all about.

+
Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane- Frasier (NBC)
+
Ricky Gervais as David Brent- The Office (BBC America)
Winner: Ricky Gervais as David Brent- The Office (BBC
America).
Why?: The oblivious boss who’s under the false impression that his employees think he’s cool. David Brent was incompetent, insensitive, insecure, a little corrupt and absolutely hilarious. Ricky Gervais couldn’t have done a better job. Seriously, the man was flawless.
|
+
Cheryl Hines as Cheryl David- Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
+
Jane Kaczmarek as Lois- Malcolm in the Middle (FOX)
+
Kerri Kenney as Deputy Trudy Wiegel- Reno 911 (Comedy Central)
+
Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw- Sex and the City (HBO)
Winner:
Why?: This was the weakest of all categories. It seems as if no one is able to craft excellent comedic roles for women anymore. That aside, Kerri Kenney’s performance as the lonely and clinically depressed Trudy Wiegel had far more character depth and simple provided more laughs than any of her peers.

Dylan Walsh as Sean McNamara- Nip/Tuck (FX)
+
Omar Gooding as Demetrius Harris- Playmakers (ESPN)
+
Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey- The Shield (FX)
Winner: Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey- The Shield (FX).
Why?: Hmm, this was hard. Very hard. I would like to have given the award to David Boreanaz, seeing as how he won’t get another chance at it, but Michael Chiklis deserves it. And since I don’t give sympathy votes (sorry John Ritter, better luck in the 80's) his performance as the gritty, antihero corrupt cop gets the win. Just look at his eyes, so much intensity.
|
+
Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow- Alias (ABC)
+
Amber Tamblyn as Joan Giradi- Joan of Arcadia (CBS)
+
Joely Richardson as Julia McNamara- Nip/Tuck (FX)
+
Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano- The Sopranos (HBO)
Winner: Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow- Alias (ABC).
Why?: The most one-sided of all the categories. Seriously, Jennifer Garner displays enough charm and emotion to fill up the entire ballot herself. All of the other nominees are basically there as a technicality, except Joely Richardson that is. Even with Alias in its worst season so far, which is still superb, Garner’s acting abilities easily puts her contemporaries to shame.

+
“The Why of Fry”- Futurama by David X. Cohen
(FOX)

“Those Bitches Tried to Cheat Me”- Home
Movies by Brendan Small (Cartoon Network)
+
“Fun with Weapons”- South Park by Trey Parker
(Comedy Central)
Winner: “The Why of Fry”- Futurama by David X. Cohen
(FOX).
Why?: Fry feels blue after learning that he is virtually
irrelevant to the Planet Express Team and his beloved
Leela. But he soon learns that he is in fact the most
important person in the universe. What follows is a
series of the shows offbeat, irreverent humor with a bit
of heart to go around. Just narrowly edged out its
psychedelic peer “The Sting.”

“Key Decisions”- Arrested Development by Brad Copeland (FOX)

“The Why of Fry”- Futurama by David X. Cohen (FOX)

“Episode 2"- The Office by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (BBC America)
+
“Episode 6"- The Office by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (BBC America)
Winner: “Episode 2"- The Office by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (BBC America).
Why?: It’s time for the annual staff appraisals and David Brent is determined to get the new employees to like him by reciting quotes from other philosophers while his 2nd in command Gareth creates a list f the ‘weak’ employees. Hilarity ensues.

+
“You’re Welcome”- Angel by David Fury (The WB)
+
“Pilot”- Nip/Tuck by Ryan Murphy (FX)
+
“Mum”- The Shield by Kurt Sutter and Shawn Ryan (FX)
Winner: “Not Fade Away”- Angel by Jeffrey Bell and Joss Whedon (The WB).
Why?: It was a bittersweet stroke of genius for one of the best shows in recent memory. Taking its name from the Buddy Holly classic (has their ever been a more fitting title for a series finale?) And throwing in everything you’d expect from the brilliant mind of Joss Whedon. “Not Fade Away” is easily one of the best series finales in history.

Late Night with Connan O’Brien from Lorne Michaels and Jeffrey Ross (NBC)
Winner: Late Night with Connan O’Brien from Lorne Michaels and Jeffrey Ross (NBC).
Why?: He’s out there almost every night and is always, not just most of the time, uproarious. Now Richter-less for many a year, Connan remains fresh and smart with laughs to spare in a time when all, even Letterman, of his late night rivals are slipping, especially you Jay.

+
The Simpsons created by Matt Groening (FOX)
+
Space Ghost Coast to Coast from Michael Lazzo (Cartoon Network)
Winner: Futurama created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen.
Why?: With The Simpsons and South Park offering inconsistent seasons it only makes sense for Futurama to get the win. Despite being badly mishandled by FOX, Futurama was able to conjure up some of its best moments with its usual witty writing and beautiful animation. Maybe it can pull a Family Guy and reemerge in the near future.

The Office created by Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant (BBC America)
Winner: The Office created by Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant (BBC America).
Why?: Damn Brits, they do everything better than us. Rock and Roll, accents, imperialism and now even sitcoms? What gives? With network television in a slump, the only network coming close to beating out The Office was Arrested Development, we’ve been forced to search else where for our comedy. And this genius gem about the drudgery of a typical white collar workday found itself in the hearts of critics and fans everywhere. The best sitcom since Frasier, period.

Alias created by J.J. Abrams (ABC)
+
Angel created by Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt (The WB)
+
Nip/Tuck created by Ryan Murphy (FX)
+
The Shield created by Shawn Ryan (FX)
Winner: Angel created by Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt.
Why?: With the underlining message of ‘never give up, no matter what the odds’ Angel surpassed the competition with relative ease with on last hurrah. By adding James Marsters’ ever loveable Spike to the mix, the show attained new heights with its consistently brilliant plot twists and white-hot wit. So long then Joss Whedon, hope to hear from you soon.
